Stripe vs Lemon Squeezy: payments for indie developers

Payment terminal at a modern retail counter

When I started charging for Flow, I had two real options. Stripe, which I already knew, or Lemon Squeezy, which I kept hearing about from other indie makers.

I chose Stripe. That was the right call for me, but it might not be the right call for you. The two platforms are not interchangeable. They solve different problems for different kinds of builders.

Stripe is a payment infrastructure company. Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record. That distinction matters more than any feature list.

What merchant of record means

A merchant of record is the legal entity that sells your product to the customer. They handle tax collection, filing, and remittance. They deal with chargebacks. They manage compliance across jurisdictions.

With Stripe, you are the merchant of record. Stripe processes the card, but your business is on the hook for sales tax, VAT, and regulatory compliance.

With Lemon Squeezy, they are the merchant of record. You build the product. They handle the legal and tax side of selling it.

That difference alone should decide your choice for most solo developers.

Fees compared

Side by side comparison of two payment checkout flows
Stripe and Lemon Squeezy solve different payment problems.

Stripe charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per domestic transaction. Add 0.5% for Billing if you handle subscriptions. Add 0.5% for Tax if you want automatic tax calculation. International cards add another 1%.

Lemon Squeezy charges 5% plus $0.50 per transaction. That is it. No extra for subscriptions. No extra for tax. No extra for the merchant-of-record service.

On a $50 monthly subscription, Stripe might cost around $2.25 with Billing and Tax included. Lemon Squeezy would cost $3.00. The gap narrows at higher price points and widens at lower ones.

Tax handling

This is where Lemon Squeezy wins cleanly. They calculate, collect, and remit sales tax and VAT globally. You do not register for VAT in the EU. You do not track US state tax thresholds. You do not file quarterly returns.

With Stripe, you can add Stripe Tax for 0.5%. It calculates what is owed. But it does not file for you. You still need to register, collect, and remit. Or hire an accountant. Or use a separate tax filing service.

If you sell to customers in the EU, the UK, or multiple US states, the merchant-of-record model saves real time and real risk.

Ease of setup

Lemon Squeezy is easier to set up. You create products in their dashboard, paste a checkout link or embed a widget, and you are done. No webhooks to configure. No subscription logic to build. No customer portal to design.

Stripe takes longer. You set up products in the dashboard or via API. You handle webhooks for subscription events. You build or customize the checkout flow. You manage the customer portal.

For a non-technical founder, Lemon Squeezy is the obvious choice. For a developer who wants full control, Stripe is worth the extra work.

Control and flexibility

Stripe wins on flexibility. You can build any pricing model: usage-based, per-seat, tiered, hybrid. You can customize the checkout flow completely. You can connect to any backend.

Lemon Squeezy is more opinionated. It supports subscriptions and one-time purchases well. It handles license keys for software. But if your pricing model is unusual, you may hit limits.

Stripe also has a much larger integration ecosystem. Every analytics tool, accounting package, and SaaS metric dashboard connects to Stripe. Lemon Squeezy's integrations are growing but smaller.

Payouts and holding periods

Lemon Squeezy holds your funds for a period before payout, typically around a week or two depending on your account. This is standard for merchant-of-record platforms because they need time to handle refunds and chargebacks.

Stripe pays out on a rolling two-day basis for most accounts in supported countries. Your cash arrives faster.

For a bootstrapped founder, cash flow matters. Getting paid two days after a charge versus two weeks is a real difference.

Who should choose Stripe

Stripe suits technical founders who want control. If you are building a SaaS with custom pricing, complex billing logic, or a marketplace component, Stripe is the better long-term fit.

It also makes sense if you are in a country where Lemon Squeezy is not supported. Stripe operates in more countries and currencies.

I chose Stripe for Flow because I wanted to own the full payment flow. I wanted to build custom checkout behavior. I wanted instant payouts. The tradeoff was handling tax compliance myself.

Who should choose Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy suits indie developers and small teams who want to sell software without becoming tax experts. If you are launching a simple SaaS, a template, a course, or a digital product, the merchant-of-record model removes a huge burden.

It is especially good if you sell globally from day one. EU VAT, US state sales tax, and other local rules are not your problem.

The higher per-transaction fee is the price of that convenience. For many solo founders, it is a fair trade.

The honest middle ground

Some founders start with Lemon Squeezy to launch fast, then migrate to Stripe when they outgrow the platform or want more control. That is a valid strategy. Just know that migrating payment providers is never painless. You will need to handle subscription transfers, new checkout flows, and potential customer friction.

Other founders use both. Lemon Squeezy for simple digital products. Stripe for the main SaaS subscription. That works if you have separate product lines with different needs.

My verdict

Stripe and Lemon Squeezy are both good at what they do. The choice depends on what you value more: control or convenience.

If you are technical, want custom billing, and do not mind handling tax yourself, Stripe is the better fit. If you want to launch fast, sell globally, and never think about VAT registration, Lemon Squeezy is worth the higher fee.

For Flow, Stripe was the right call. For your project, the answer might be different. That is fine. Pick the tool that matches your stage, not your ambition.
